Oxygen is the most critical of all impurities found in gas streams. Capillary columns and polar packed columns are unable to tolerate even small amounts of oxygen. Oxygen oxidizes the stationary phase deteriorating column performance and reducing column life. The oxidation products are volatile and cause baseline noise and drift when they reach the detector. This problem worsens as the column temperature increases. Oxygen also adversely affects analyses performed at high sensitivities or by component specific detectors. It can cause filament damage and burnout in GC/MS.

An indicating oxygen trap provides an easy and convenient means for monitoring the performance of your large capacity non-indicating oxygen trap. Simply install the indicating oxygen trap in series after the large capacity trap. The indicating oxygen trap shows oxygen removal by changing colour as the adsorbent material depletes. When the indicating trap starts to show a colour change, the large trap is almost spent and it is time to replace it.
